Childen With Disabilities -- Joint effort of nine federal agencies and offices "to provide children with disabilities and their parents access to federal, state, local and national resources." Info on advocacy, education, transportation, health, housing, recreation, and technical assistance is provided. The site contains materials on a broad array of developmental, physical, and emotional disabilities. Includes links to sources of grants and funding, research and statistics, activities and games, and a moderated online bulletin board for children to post and share experiences.
SmartAlex ICU -- Free parental control software. It takes screen snapshots at regular intervals, to provide you with the day's activities, including the date and time of each picture taken. See images of chat room conversations, email, word processing documents and more. You'll have a visual record of virtually everything that's displayed on your computer's screen. It also monitors computer activity all the time, not only during internet sessions. The program is very simple to use.
Screen It -- This service was started to serve many parents who wonder if certain movies would be okay for their children.
FamilyTime -- Helpful and totally free software. Click the "free familytime offer" link and fill out the form to get a free copy of family time software, it "integrates six programs to help you run an active family, large or small." Allow three to five weeks for shipment.
ABC's of Parenting -- This site has tons of info for parents from the latest product safety recalls to parenting tips from newborns to teens. They also have discussion boards, chatrooms, an interactive journal and lot's more!
BabaBabies -- Free professionly designed homepage for your child.
Family Contract for Online Safety -- There are lots of "rules" on how kids (and parents) can use the internet but the most important rule is that parents and kids agree to a set of criteria. Here, based on "kids rules for online safety" and "guidlines for parents" are two pledges that kids and parents can take. They should be printed out, signed by both kids and parents, and posted near the computer.
GetNetWise -- A resource for families and caregivers to help kids have safe, educational, and entertaining online experiences. They include a glossary of internet terms, a guide to online safety, directions for reporting online trouble, a directory of online safety tools, and great sites for kids to visit.
Lissa Explains It All! -- The first and original html help just for kids. This site is by a 13 year old girl in florida with lots of great instruction in HTML, java, frames, tables, colors, etc. A must see!
Easy Memory -- Find pairs, or groups of three or more identical cards. Play alone, with friends or even your youngest kids. Play with animal cards, large disney cards or lot of others cards. Improve your memory by playing with your favorite friends and pictures.
Lawrence Goetz Software -- Parents wanting their youngsters to learn and improve their computer skills are going to love this software. Mr. Goetz has designed several interesting, fun and easy to use programs that teach toddlers basic computer skills like moving and clicking the mouse, offers include larry's animals-n-things, an animal and object game where the child can click and see movement and hear sounds. [editors note: much of this software is shareware, but there are some programs that are free.]
Family Friendly Search -- Searches simultaneously through yahooligans, aol kids, kidsclick, and saluki search. For those who prefer searching through carefully selected children's sites to simply filtering out unsafe sites.
Christina Word -- Children's talking word processor designed to teach the basics of word processing in a fun way. Naturally it's free, but, like many freeware sites, it has several pop-up ads. Still, the software is well worth the annoyance.
Riverdeep -- A commercial educational site, but they also have several free educational programs for download, as well as some online educational games. This site looks like a good resource to me.
Zeek -- Online games, toons, and safe surfing for kids.
Lil'Fingers -- Introduce a toddler to the world of computers via an online storybook where you click and read while looking at colorful drawings. Several to choose from.
Candle Light Stories -- Beautifully illustrated stories for children, featuring both classics and contemporary contributions, includes links to other sites that offer stories and illustrated entertainment.
Big Eye CyberPlayground -- This site lists 60 sites where kids can explore without a problem.
Kids Corner -- Gospel Communications Network a division of Gospel Films, Inc. has created a cool kids game site. Kids can play a gospel version of the popular game Concentration plus other games like Help the Shepherd Find his Lost Sheep, Jonah's Adventure WordSearch and more mazes for your enjoyment. Also lists links to other cool stuff for kids.
Sean's Magic Slate -- A coloring activity for ages three through seven. Select a backdrop, add the objects of your choice from the object palette, then add color. Change the background picture at any time. Add more objects, move them around, delete the ones you don't want. Express yourself! Download this fine, free program for the kiddos! This is the free games page from FamilyGames.com and there are several other freeware games on the page too. I like Valvo for example. It's simple, but still challenging.
Dr. Suess -- Seussville, Random House publishing's online haven for the works of Dr. Suess and the kids who love them. Send your kids--your very young kids--here for games. They're simple, entertaining, and educational. Grownups can take the seuss trivia quiz (with help from kids of course) and maybe win one of the monthly prizes.
CBC4kids -- A nicely done site from the canadian broadcasting company. Kids can comment on daily news stories, create do-it-yourself science experiments, quiz themselves on sports, play one of the top-ten hits on the sound bar jukebox, send in their own reviews of music and movies, and take part in discussion groups at the clubhouse.
Light Relief -- Let 'Em Draw! A simple, free child's drawing game where colored beads are placed on a black background and then, when the child is finished creating a masterpiece, the colored beads can be lit up. The program has a save/print feature, an eraser, and a choice of five colors. Webtime Stories -- This is a great collection concerning children's literature and contains selected "best of" web sites that explore picture books, folk tales, books for children and teens, and offer activities for all ages.
Billy Bear4Kids -- This is a great play area for the younger set. There are puzzles, games, and printable pages that you and your kids will love to play. If your connection is slow, they even have a mirrored site for better access.
Funology -- The science of having fun. The site offers tons of fun, creative activities, games, jokes and trivia just for kids. They might even learn something while having fun. Best of all, everything on the site is absolutely free.
Toy Trunk Railroad -- The coal fired comic strip. All aboard for some toy train cartoon hijinks! This site is updated daily with new toy trunk railroad comic strips. Also check out the activity fun page for kids!
Sticker World -- From the childrens television workshop (sesame street), now online! This is a fabulous site, designed for kids aged 6-12. It provides a multitude of interaction such as: "sticker world", collect and make e-stickers; kids can make their own web pages, games, puzzles, clubs and lots more! Of course, a parents' toolbox.
WackyWiper -- With this free download, every page you visit using Internet Explorer will be changed into silly and stupid text. Ten to choose from: Beav-Ize, Accents, Pig Latin, Canadian, French, Valley, Umm, Negate, Roman, and Ken.
